What is a server?

The word “server” commonly refers to a specialized computer (or hardware) that the server software runs on. The server is optimized to perform services for other computers, printers, faxes or other devices known as “clients.”

Server (or server computer) is also used to describe computers intended for running server applications, unattended, for extended time. While any computer can run server operating systems and server applications, a “dedicated” server computer has special features intended for specific use. Features often include faster processor and memory, more RAM, larger hard drives, higher reliability, redundant power supplies, redundant hard drives, compact size and shape, modular design and serial console redirection.
